Parkside Reading Day!
Last Friday, you had the opportunity to visit with elementary students at Parkside and do some reading. Journal about the experience. What were your observations concerning the following: attitudes toward reading, reading abilities, types of books they chose, etc. Did they like your book pick? Consider what we have discussed about becoming a reader and the stages you go through. Did any of your students read to you? Also, consider what we discussed about development in terms of social awareness, cognitive abilities, etc. How did they respond to you reading to them? Do you have any funny stories to share?
I didn't go to Parkside but I had a difficult time reading when I was little. From the years, teachers always asked me if I had a disability but I didn’t know if I did or not. But my most favorite books as a child were the “Curious George” books.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday, when we went to Parkside to read to the 2nd graders, I had a lot of fun. The little kids (age ranged from 7-8) were very attentive. They listened to me very well. The few that actually read to me, read very good. Sure they might have a problem with a word or two, but when I told them the word, they started over and said the word. I thought it was very cute! I brought my favorite book from home, The Little Fish Who Got Away (not sure who the author is) and they loved it! This book goes back to before my mom was even born (1958 I think) and I was a favorite of hers too. I had a lot of fun and I wish I could go again. The little kids behaved very well and were all perfect angels!
ReplyDeleteWhen i was at parkside, I read Curious George and the Pizza Party. They were entertained by the story. I had 2 of my students read to me because I only had one book. When they didn’t understand a word, I either helped them after like 10 seconds or they sounded it out. They really enjoyed me reading to them.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was at Parkside, the students were really into the book that I was reading. This one kid took the book and was reading better than I did. There were a lot of kids that were at different reading levels, I had some kids that couldn’t pronounce the words and some that knew everything. The kids were really into Green Eggs and Ham.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed going to parkside to read to the kids. I could tell that the kids really enjoyed it as well. They were really excited to listen and enjoyed the books I had picked out. They had been books that I would have enjoyed at their age and even enjoyed reading now. I could tell they liked them as well. I even had the opportunity to listen to some of the children read. I could tell they enjoy readying and have had a lot of practice. It was a fun experience ready to the kids.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t go to Parkside on Friday, but reading came easy to me when I was little. I was an advanced reader ever since I learned to read in Kindergarten. I liked to read books by Judy Blume and I read many of the Junie B. Jones books. My favorite books were probably The Magic Tree House books. I think I read just about all of them and own all of them as well. After I was done reading those books I started to get into books by Andrew Clements.
ReplyDeleteThe kids that I read to were very well behaved. They enjoyed sitting there and being read to. One kid chose to read a book himself. He has very strong reading skills for being so young. The kids had their own books to read after I was done with mine that way they wouldn’t get bored and lose interest. The kids were able to sound out words that they didn’t know while they were reading, which I think is pretty good for their age.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went to park side most of the kids were pretty excited about getting to be read to. I read the giving tree and the velveteen rabbit aka the two most depressing children books ever. The kids really loved the giving tree because it’s just a classic story. I had a few kids read to me and I always find it a little funny how well they knew a book. If one of the children were to stumble on a word they would sound out each syllable then try to put it all together. Overall it was a fun experience.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday while reading to the second graders and having them read to me, I noticed many different reading abilities and habits throughout the three groups. Two of the groups chose to read small chapter books and they only struggled on a few words. I felt they also liked my book choices and stayed focused and interested through almost all three books. One of the boys in the first group I read to suggested he read one of his books. The other boy in this group had already read the same book and was less interested. In my last group I had two girls who took turns reading a page or two in their books. I noticed they were more excited for it to be their turn and therefore would give their partner less attention. Overall, I enjoyed reading to the second graders and having them read to me.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading to the second graders at Parkside, I noticed that every single group I read to wanted me to read the story with the tiger on the front first. That book was about a tiger who lived in a boy’s closet and wouldn’t be quiet enough so the boy could sleep. The kids, especially the boys I read to, really got into the book, and liked the funny scenarios that the tiger got into. The other book, one about Curious George, was longer and the kids got a little squirmy by the time I was done. They liked to interrupt with comments. They were really excited when I asked them if they wanted to go find another book to read (I usually had a few minutes left at the end of each session.) There was one girl I read to that I had the opportunity to listen to her read a couple booklets from her “book baggy” that she had with her. When she read, I could tell she had read the books before because she didn’t have much difficulty with the words and had a good concept of what the story was about.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday, I had brought two books of my own to read to the children, RAWR! and How Does a Dinosaur go to School?. Most of them wanted to read the dinosaur book first. All three groups of kids that I had were quiet and content. Only two out of five of the kids that I had wanted to read to me, and they did extremely well! They impressed me with their reading abilities. When they had trouble reading, I would start to help them out with a word and they would catch on very quickly. Most of them said thank you after I read to them and wanted me to come back and read again.
ReplyDeleteGoing over to Parkside was a very good experience. It was very fun to read to the little kids because it seemed like they really liked it.
ReplyDeleteI had fun on the trip to Parkside Elementary last Friday. The kids seemed excited to have us there reading to them. I brought along the book Fly Guy and Buzz Boy, they really enjoyed it. All of the boys I read to had different reading abilities but they all wanted to read to me once I was done reading to them. When I was young I liked to have people read to me and didn’t have a problem reading on my own.
ReplyDeleteI brought two books of my own. One book was Zachs alligator. The other book was about a frog and toad. The kids mainly wanted Zachs alligator. The kids were great. They sat there and listened. I would stop reading and ask them questions, such as “would you ever do that?” They would laugh and say “no”. I read the frog and toad book to the second group. They seemed so into it, because they sat right next to me, one even rested his head on my shoulder. In my last group of kids this little girl stood out to me, she said she loves to read. She even asked me if she could read. While the boy didn’t like reading, he preferred to be read to. I thought it was fun to read to them. I hope to do it again.
ReplyDeleteI had a great experience reading with the elementary students at Parkside last week. While at Parkside, we rotated through three different groups of kids. Each group I had was very eager to pick out books to be read to them. Most of the books chosen were about animals or had vivid pictures. The book I brought was only read to one group who seemed interested in the pictures; however, the book was probably a little too long for that age group. The last group I was assigned to was just one girl who read from her Junie B. Jones book to me. She did a very good job sounding out the words she was stuck on and seemed proud to read so well. I believe going to Parkside should happen every year.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite kid’s book is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. It was the first books that I ever read when I moved to American. I loved that it had colorful picture and easy to understand. It helped me a lot. One reason is because it helped me learn the alphabets. And that I shouldn’t be reckless. I think that you should read to the children this book.
ReplyDeleteGoing to Parkside and reading to the kids was a great opportunity for me. I read them the book The Pout-Pout Fish written by Deborah Diesen. As I read to them, I could tell that they were great listener. They were able to ask me what a word is when they couldn’t understand it. They were also very interested in the pictures. Most of my students did read to me. I could tell that many of them were very excited to. I observed the books that they had in their cubbies and saw they have different range of reading levels. My last group of students was so excited to read. One would read a paragraph from her book and then the other would quickly start reading a section from his book. They just want me to listen to them and it was very cute. I would love to do this again!
ReplyDeleteThe elementary students that I read to were familiar with the book I was reading. It’s funny because it was my first time reading that book, so I didn’t know how the book was going to end, but they sure did. They really liked the illustration in the book and loved pointing out funny pictures. I finished reading to them early, so they went and brought the books they were reading to show me.
ReplyDeleteMy experience at the elementary school was amazing. I was surprised at how many of them where excited we were there to read to them. I found that with almost every group of kids I had, they all loved to read and loved the books I had brought. I even found that some of them were reading with me as I read to them. The books I brought I thought interested them because they were about animals. One group of girls I had when I was reading to them had a story for every page I read. Telling me about stuff the book had reminded them of. I feel that is the reason they loved it so much, because they could connect with stuff in their loves. The last group I had was one little girl and she read to me. She picked smaller books that had 5-10 words to a page. As far as being able to read them on her own she did a wonderful job. All in all the experience was one I wouldn’t pass up if I ever got the chance to do again.
ReplyDeleteMy experience over at the elementary school was awesome. I loved all of the elementary kids that I got signed up with. They were all great listeners and paid attention to my reading at all time. They told me that they all loved the book that I read to them. Whenever I am done with reading with the kids, I made sure that each of them read to me. Some were shy and some were please to read to me and sometime some wanted me to read more but I told them that I wanted to hear them read too. The experience with the elementary kids were a lot different than I thought, because I thought that they were shy and not talkative, but they were actually really talkative and fun to be around with. I would love to do this the second time if we ever get the chance to do it again.
ReplyDeleteLast Friday I had the opportunity to read to 2nd and 1st graders. My first small group of 2 girls and 1 boy seemed like they really enjoyed me reading to them. I can’t remember the name of the book I read but I was about dinosaurs eating behaviors. They listened well and they said they liked the book. A few of the kids read to me and they were really god readers. They sounded out the words and read with their finger pointing at each word. I really enjoyed reading to them and I would do it again!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed going to Parkside and reading to the younger kids. It seemed like they all really enjoyed it as well. They all paid really close attention to the books showing how much they enjoyed it. In one class room I had a little girl read to me. It was cute to watch her figure out the words and do such a great job reading at such a young age. I hated that stage of not always being sure what I word said, and it took a lot of courage for her to try and read that book for me. This was a great experience and a fun morning, I would enjoy doing this again.
ReplyDeleteDuring my time reading to elementary students, I was able to experience their attitudes about reading, abilities, and genres they chose. Most of the students I read to seemed to be excited about reading. That may be because a high school student was reading to them. Also, some of the students read to me. Some students could read very fluently, while others stumbled upon the words. Most stories the students chose were fictional stories with animals as characters.
ReplyDeleteMy experience in Parkside last Friday was fun and interesting I read to the kids a book called Fly Guy plays football. A lot of the kids liked the book and thought it was funny and an interesting book, after I would finish reading to them they would go pick some books they wanted to read to me. After they read to me I would ask them some questions like if they liked reading and what were their favorite books, a lot of them didn’t like reading that much but others did. Overall it was good experience and would like to do it again.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went Parkside Elementary to read to 1st graders. I enjoyed reading to kids; they all seemed to like the book I was reading to them. I had one little girl read to and her name was Sydney. The book she read was the “Pet Shop”. She took her time when she read, if she didn’t know I word, she would sound it out. While she was reading it reminded of the title one classes I use to do in elementary school.
ReplyDeleteGoing to park side it was a good experience. I really enjoyed reading to them, they look interested and happy that we take time to go and read to them. This was my second time reading to little kids. But, each time is a different experience. One of the students read a book to me. I was fun hearing them read. All the little kids look interested in reading and looking at the cover of the book and the pictures. If I had another change of going I would change my book, because most of the little kids had already heard or read the book. But, even though that was the situation they still enjoyed me reading to them. I got a little disappointed when I would ask them if they have heard of the book and they would say yes. But they still look happy and they were enjoying it and that was a good feeling.
ReplyDeleteWhen I went to the school I was feeling confident and it made me really happy to have the chance to read to the other kids. The kids that I read to seemed to like my book although some of them did read me a book of their own. For as young as they are I’m surprised they actually paid attention for as long as they did. If I had the chance to do it again I would want to go it was actually fun.
