Teacher initiated blog #3: April 2-6

Parkside Reading Day!

Last Friday, you had the opportunity to visit with elementary students at Parkside and do some reading. Journal about the experience. What were your observations concerning the following: attitudes toward reading, reading abilities, types of books they chose, etc. Consider what we have discussed about becoming a reader and the stages you go through. Also, consider what we discussed about development in terms of social awareness, cognitive abilities, etc. How did they respond to you reading to them? What did you think about them reading to you? Do you have any funny stories to share?

  1. I really enjoyed reading to the kids. They were all so very cute and very fun to be with. It was fun to be able to help the kindergarteners with their reading, and get to see how they learn. When I got to read with the second graders I noticed that with my first two kids one was reading with incredible expression and one had troubles reading simple words. They were easily distracted but seemed to really enjoy when I read to them. One looked at me and said, "Man you can read so fast. How do you do that!" I thought that was pretty cute. I enjoyed that they got to read to us because it seemed to me that by doing this we were able to help them believe in themselves, and to know that they are gifted and talented. I enjoyed this experience and learned a great deal from it!

  2. All the kids seemed pretty excited to read. One boy snached my book out of my hands and began reading it before I could stop him. The only one that didn't seem all that trilled aobut it was the kindergardener I read to. She hardly said a word but maybe she was just shy. I know the girls I read to really liked the horse books I brought!

  3. The Kids's seemed very happy to have us in the classroom. We serve as a very influencial role model to a lot of them, and that's an honor. Their reading abilities tremendously improved from Kindergarten to 2nd Grade. The chose book ranging from human body parts, to "Froggy" kid's books. They responded somewhat intertained with me reading to them, but some were easily distracted. They liked me reading! They all wanted me to read first. The students were very excited to talk about their personal lives (favorite movies, books, sports). They were all very nice and funny in their own way, it was fun to hear about the lives of Kindergarteners and 2nd Graders.

  4. I had a fun time reading to the little tikes! I was surprised when I went into the kindergarten room and my little kid, Chase, was able to read! He went slow through his book about mummies. Even though he thought every word that started with "s" was "scary" he still got through it totally fine! I was really impressed! But when he was reading he came across a very tough word, sounding out the word "but" he kept on saying "boot." So I quickly told him that the word was pronounced "but." Chase got wide-eyed and then started to laugh, there was no convincing him of the difference between "but" and "butt." Of course I started laughing and then Chase started to tell all the kids around him that he read the word "but."
    It was a fun experience.

  5. I had a great time reading with the little kids. Going into it, I was a little nervous because I thought they would be shy and I would be doing all the talking. However, it was almost the opposite. Every group that I had was extremely talkative and we got along very well. They were all eager to show me their skills and I didnt even have to read to the second graders.

I noticed that many of the second graders were reading at different levels. As a second grader, I started out slow but progressed to the effient reader that I am today. I think that having older readers come in, such as ourselves, was a great influence on them and shows them that reading isn't easy but will improve.

  6. First my little Kindergarten girl, Morgan, read me a book and I think she mostly had that book memorized. She sped through it and made no mistakes. Then I read my book to her and she seemed to enjoy it very much, then we had time for another one of her stories. She stuggled with that story. It wasn't any harder than the first book that she read, but she just wasn't as familiar with it. I needed to help her pronounce many words, and she seemed frustrated that she didnt understand.
We then went to go read with some of the second graders, and I was paired with three little boys. One of the boys seemed very into my reading, he wanted to listen to me read. One of the other boys didn't care a thing about what I read, he wanted to go get water, and got to his locker, and do anything not to listen to me. The other two boys were getting frustrated because the one boy was being so disrespectful. I think the boy who didnt want to listen thought that he was "too cool" to read. That is sad that he cares so much about what he thinks that people think about him. He is only in second grade and he is already concerned about what society thinks about him. I asked all three of the boys what their favorite thing is to do, with very little pause they all said there favorite thing to do is "PLAY VIDEO GAMES!!!" When I was in second grade and when I was asked what my favorite thing was to do, it probably would have been to read.
After I was with the boys, I went to a different class and was paired with two girls with very different reading levels. The one girl excelled a lot in reading, and she let me know it. She said "I am in the highest reading level." I could tell the other girl felt belittled and was very discouraged to read. I asked her several times if she wanted to read and she would just quietly shake her head and say no. I felt bad that she didn't feel that her reading skills were good enough. I feel that even if she wasn't a fast reader she was still reading and that was all that was important.

  7. First off, I love children. So being able to read to the 2nd graders made my day. They were all so happy and carefree. It's amazing how just having an older person come and read to them makes their day! Making little kids happy is basically what I live for, as cheesy as that is. When I was reading to one of my kids, London, we were reading a book about race cars. He was so into the book and was so telling us what color the cars were and what numbers they were. He was so happy while listening to his para read. It made me so happy. They were all so proud that they could read their books to me. There was also one boy, Erick, he was reading this book about Sharks to the other kids and I. He was so excited about sharks and would tell me which tooth was his favorite or which tail was his favorite. They were all just so cute! I also had Todd's little brother Tad. He was adorable!! I loved all the kids I read to.

  8. On Friday during our wonderful day at Parkside Elementary I noticed a big difference between the reading abilities of the kindergarteners and second graders. The attention span of the kids was lacking but the expectations were not very high. When the kids did pay attention though, they were easy to work with. Most of the kids that read to me tried to read books well above the reading level they could read at. All the kids were much more happy when I read to them compared to when they read aloud to me. The best part of going to Parkside was meeting me newest friends Abbaas. Pronounced "a boss".

  9. On friday during our great experience at Parkside I got to read to some of the 1st and 2nd graders, and they also got to read to me. When we first got to Parkside we went to a 1st grade class and i got to read to a little girl who was very shy. After about 10 minutes she started to not be so shy and talk a little more. After reading to the 1st graders, we went down to the 2nd grade wing. We went into a classroom and I ended up getting to read to 3 girls, they were very interested int he books I read to them. After i was done they got there books out and i got to listen to them read. When they were finished it was time for me to leave and go to the last classroom. When we arrived at the next classroom there was many excited kids waiting for us to read to them. I ended up getting to read to one boy and one girl in that classroom. All in all I really enjoyed the experience on friday. It was cool to have the 1st and 2nd graders read to me, it brought back good memories for me.

  10. I loved going to Parkside and reading to the kids. We started out reading to some kindergarteners. I read to a little girl who was extremely shy. She talked very quietly, I couldn't even hear her when she said her name 3 times! I read her my book "If You Take a Mouse to School" and she listened very nicely. After I read my book I talked to her for a while about her past reading experiences. She told me that she likes when people read to her and that her parents read to her at home. After reading to the kindergarteners we walked on down to the second grade wing. I went to Mrs. Leek's room to read. Lucky for me, my peer helper was in that room. Her and her friends recognized me immediately and we formed a reading circle. I read them my book and they were great listeners. One of the girls, Danya, sang me some songs out of her book. I thought it was very neat how she was singing to us. The next girl couldn't keep focused. Then my peer helper kid, Calin, had way to much energy that when she read to kept changing her voice. The girls all laughed and had a good time while I was there. The next class we went to was Mrs. Semler. In this classroom I was paired with two other second graders. One was a girl that I have in my classroom on Weds. nights' for church. Her name is Megan and she read to me some of her "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." The other boy in our group was reading two books at the time; The Hunger Games and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. They both read to me parts of their books. I was really impressed with how well they were reading. I think that they are reading better than I was at that level, which is good to see in little kids. I really enjoyed being able to read to these kids and then them read to me. This kind of environment is one that I might look into in the future! :)

  11. I loved reading and spending time with the kids. The first little girl I was paired up with absolutely loved to read. She wanted to show me what she could read before she wanted me to read to her. I could tell she was very proud of herself. When I read to her, she payed more attention to the pictures than my reading. The first group I was in was more interested in hearing me read. They starred at me instead of looking at the pictures. The second group I was in I was with two boys. They wanted to read to me first instead of me reading to them. The first boy that read was a little slow and looked at the pictures to figure out what to say. The second boy was a super fast reader and was always correcting the other boy. At one point I lost my place because he asked me a question and before I knew it he was reading the book for me. I had a blast working with them and seeing their different reading levels.

  12. It was very fun reading to the kids, and seeing what they really were interested in and what they liked. The kids really enjoyed reading to me and I was amazed with how well some of them could read at such a young age. The kids in my group were smart and liked Danny and the dinosaur, I read that to every group that i read to. I liked it when the kids would read to me. I noticed that all the kids read at different levels, but they all enjoyed listening to me and the others read.

  13. This is one of the best experiences I have had. Reading to both the kindergarteners and the second graders was exciting. I could tell the difference in stages of reading that each and every student was in. One boy i read with had already read the Harry Potter series and is barely in second grade! I could tell he was a very intellegent student by the way he read at such a higher performing reading level. Although many of the students didn't have such a long attention span we all enjoyed reading as a whole. We spoke of the book and how it related to one another and talked about their family and friends.

  14. I had a pretty fun time with reading to the kids. While we were having the kids get chosen the teacher called out the names of the kids I was with and a kid yelled out "Yes! I knew I would be with him, I just knew it!" It was pretty funny to watch him kind of jump up and down and sit next to the window. I started reading to the two first, they both were sitting there talking about the pictures in the book and what will come next they were interested more in the pictures then the book I assume. Although when I had the kids start to read they were excited too. The kids both read me a story and both followed along within the books. In the next class room while I was reading to those two kids they wanted me to take them out into the hallway, once we were out there they were both pretty hyper and trying to read at the same time. I had one kid start reading a book and two pages in he stopped reading because the pages were too long and he said "ummmm okay your turn" to the other kid. I had a smile on my face like wow!!

  15. I enjoyed reading at parkside very much. It was something that I had never experienced before. Something that surprised me was how much the reaction that you got out of the kids effected you. If they loved the book it made me smile and feel good, if they were disappoited and bored it made me want stop reading! The Kintergardeners I thought were much more shy, which is to be expected. I also thought they got into the books more, excitd to see what happened next. The second graders were diffentely more sure about there reading skills, and wanted to show them off. In one of my second grade groups I had two boys. They were very intersted in facts. Both of them read informational books vs. story books. I left my keys in one of the rooms and I am very thankful to Mrs.Eben for returning them to me. :)

  16. I thought it was really fun reading to the kids. It was really cool to reminise on my old days of being young. The kids really had fun too, they really liked it when you communicated with them not only with reading but about sports and how they enjoy school. Things have changed from when i was in second grade and i did not read as hard as books as they were reading. I had one kid reading to me "Percy Jackson and The Lighting Theif" WHAT? I would've maybe read that book when i was in 4th grade. Another kid was reading the Harry Potter books to me. It really shocked me how much these kids enjoyed reading, not only to us big kids, but how they enjoyed it themselves. It was hard for me to pick cause they all wanted to read first. Not only were they reading hard books, they read it well, and i didn't need to help them a lot with pronunciation. It was really awesome and a really good experiance! It was a good way to end my friday :)

  17. The little kids all seemed super excited to read. In the first group that I had the little kids both really wanted to read. They seemed to choose books that interested them over ones that would be easiest to read. They just seemed really excited about reading.

  18. All the kids I had were extrememly excited to read. The first little kindergartener jumped right in and seemed to enjoy it. She had some books that I thought were slightly difficult for her level but she tried and with alittle help from myself got though the books.
the 2nd graders I had were all extremely eager to read and didn't really want to wait for the others to read. If the reading was taking too long they started to get extremely impacient. All the kids I had were on slightly different reading levels, but in my second group of 2nd graders one of the kids was helping the other before I could even speak up.
If only the excitement they had for reading could stick to everyone throughout school. I mean I know there are many people that love to read but there are some who never read, not even for class.

  19. I could tell that all the kids loved to have us read to them. When the kids would read stories to me, I could tell the ones that would read out loud at home and the ones that didn't. The ones that don't read a lot needed a ton of help and would read so quite that you couldn't read them. I had a ton of fun reading to the kids and I would enjoy if we did it again.

  20. I enjoyed reading to them and having them read to me. The kindergartener is the only one that had some trouble reading but I helped him through it. I think all the kids I read to enjoyed having me read to them but only the kindergartner enjoyed “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie” but that is understandable since it is more so his level.

  21. I loved going and reading to the little kids. I love kids and it was alot of fun. I had different kids that ranged from super shy to outgoing. Its amazing to see how different the kids develop in reading. One kid I had was to shy to read at first but after everyone started reading she decided she wanted to. I could tell she wasn't as comfortable at reading as the others in the group. Overall I could tell they were very excited to read with us and it was alot of fun. I was surprised that the book I picked to read to the kids turned out to be one of the little girls book she reads everynight before bed. It was a ton of fun and would love to do it again.

  22. I thought the kids enjoyed having us there. At first they were a little nervouse but grew on us quickly. The kids i had were very good at reading for their grade. It was kind of hard for them to focus because they wanted to talk to me more than read. The kids that i had were not very interested in the books i brought because they were a little to old for them.

  23. The kids were awesome!! They were very attentive and I was very impressed with their comprehension and ability to pronounce and understand some of the more difficult words they were faced with. It was probably my favorite class of the year so far, not saying I don't love listening to you but....... this was just more fun :)

  24. Since I was gone during the trip to Park Side, my favorite book form my childhood was a collection of short picture stories made into one big book. My favorite story out of this book was called Make Way for the Thru Way. I loved this book, my parents said that i made them read it when I was younger. I don't remember that but that's what they said. I still remember the book and it's a great childhood memory.

  25. Since I was gone this day, so I assessed my little sister when I read to her. This is an interesting experience because she loves reading, every time she wants to read at least three books, and most of the books she has memorized and can read by heart, but she still requires you to read it to her.
